Goats Board Portland Bus, Skip Fare Like True Locals

Goats Board Portland Bus, Skip Fare Like True Locals

October 2, 2026

Portland has long prided itself on being a city where literally anyone can show up and fit right in. On Tuesday morning, that reputation received its most hooved endorsement yet, when two pygmy goats named Billy the Kid and Billy the Goat escaped their owner’s yard and made a beeline for the nearest TriMet stop to try their luck on the morning commute.

The duo — apparently dissatisfied with whatever was happening back in their yard — located the FX2 bus stop with the kind of confidence that suggests this wasn’t entirely spontaneous. They waited. They boarded. They mingled with fellow passengers who, because this is Portland, probably just scooted over and made room without so much as a raised eyebrow.

It’s worth pausing to appreciate the logistics here. These are *pygmy* goats — compact, roughly knee-height to a medium-sized adult — who independently navigated Portland streets, identified the correct transit stop, and successfully boarded public transportation. There are grown humans with smartphones who manage this with considerably less grace on a daily basis.

The Billys, now minor Portland celebrities, have apparently demonstrated that TriMet is both accessible and welcoming to all commuters, regardless of the number of legs involved. Whether they had a destination in mind or were simply enjoying the ride remains unclear. What is clear is that they boarded with more purpose than most people heading to a Monday morning meeting.

Their owner has since retrieved the entrepreneurial pair, though one imagines the goats now spend their afternoons gazing wistfully toward the bus stop, dreaming of where the FX2 might have taken them.
