Scotland’s iconic Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the British Isles, has seen its fair share of dramatic rescues over the years. But on a fine July day in 2026, mountain rescue teams found themselves dealing with a situation that was, shall we say, a little more *elevated* than usual — a dog who had gotten thoroughly, magnificently high after consuming marijuana somewhere on the mountain.
The canine adventurer, clearly having decided that the breathtaking 4,413-foot views simply weren’t trippy enough on their own, apparently stumbled across some cannabis during the hike and thought, “Don’t mind if I do.” Dogs, bless their wonderfully chaotic little hearts, have no concept of the phrase “maybe don’t eat the suspicious plant.”
What followed was presumably a very confusing experience for all involved. The dog, no longer in any condition to navigate a mountain descent — or, one imagines, to process basic reality — required the assistance of mountain rescue teams to get safely back down. Because nothing says “wholesome Scottish adventure” quite like airlifting a zonked Labrador off Britain’s tallest mountain.
To the dog’s credit, Ben Nevis does attract roughly 125,000 hikers per year, and the vast majority of them manage to descend under their own power without any pharmacological assistance. Our four-legged protagonist simply chose a different path.
Mountain rescue teams, to their eternal professionalism, treated the situation with the seriousness it deserved — which is to say they got the dog down safely, presumably while keeping very straight faces.
The dog is reported to have recovered fully, which is genuinely the most important part of this story. Whether it has learned any lesson about recreational drug use on mountainsides is, unfortunately, unconfirmed.
Hikers are reminded that Ben Nevis is challenging enough sober. For everyone. Including your dog.
