In what emergency responders are describing as ‘the most unsettling traffic incident of the year’ — and that’s saying something — millions of bees made a spectacular bid for freedom after a semitruck hauling beehives overturned, sending the buzzing passengers absolutely everywhere.
Authorities confirmed that the truck, which was apparently tasked with the deeply optimistic job of transporting multiple beehives, lost control and tipped over, essentially transforming a stretch of highway into nature’s most aggressive car wash. The resulting situation was, to use the technical term, A Lot.
First responders arriving at the scene were greeted not with the usual crumpled metal and skid marks, but with a living, humming, deeply opinionated cloud of millions of bees who had very recently discovered the concept of personal liberty and were enthusiastically exercising it.
Local authorities — bless their brave, presumably well-suited hearts — urged motorists to avoid the area, which ranks among the more self-explanatory pieces of public safety advice ever issued. ‘There are millions of bees there’ is the kind of warning that doesn’t really require a follow-up explanation.
Beekeepers were reportedly called to the scene to assist with the recovery effort, making this one of the few traffic incidents where the cleanup crew arrives wearing full armor and carrying smoke.
The bees, for their part, have not issued a statement, but sources close to the situation describe their general mood as ‘agitated.’ The truck driver’s condition was not immediately reported, though one imagines their Yelp review of the day would be fairly scathing.
No word yet on how many bees were ultimately recovered versus how many simply decided that the open road — and presumably every flowering garden within a five-mile radius — suited them just fine.
